A scheme to restore a much-loved farmhouse in Borehamwood has been approved.
The project at Wheatsheaf Farm, in Well End Road, will see the 17th century Grade II listed building converted into two homes, with another three new homes also to be built on the same site, which is located in Shenley ward.
The farmhouse was, at one time, used as a coaching inn with a brewery on the site which also accommodated stables. The now-dilapidated former modern equestrian buildings are to be demolished to make way for three of the new homes.
Councillor Nik Oakley, Hertsmere Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning, Infrastructure and Transport, said: "This scheme will give a new lease of life to a building that has lain empty and unloved for eight years.
"Frequently, listed buildings can only be renovated with revenue generated by additional development. But, as in this case, this will only be allowed by the council when it is sympathetic to the building and complies with all of our planning policies.
"In Hertsmere, we are keen to see listed buildings restored as they are a special part of our borough’s heritage, and retaining our historic built environment for future generations is fundamental to our aims."
It is hoped that the farmhouse will be open for residents to view as part of next year’s Heritage Open Days.
