A Great British Spring Clean in Farriers Way

As part of the Great British Spring Clean, Hertsmere Borough Council organised a community clean-up event in Borehamwood at the weekend.

The community clean-up took place in the Farrier's Way estate on Saturday 29 March between 10am and 4pm. During the day, residents were able to bring out household waste and bulky items to dispose of in the two skips provided by the council and were encouraged to join in a litter pick in the local area.

Letters were given to local residents in the lead up to the community clean-up, to encourage them to make the most of the skips, outline what was and wasn’t acceptable to dispose of, and to encourage them to help join the community in cleaning up the area. It also gave practical advice on the different ways to dispose of waste and unwanted items to prevent them becoming a victim of fly tipping by an unregistered waste carrier.

Cllr Chris Gray, Portfolio Holder for Communities, Neighbourhoods, Enforcement, Economic Development and Transformation, said: "Thank you to everyone who took part in the community clean-up, it was great to hear that so many people came along to support the initiative and to work together to improve our local area. Our Community Enforcement Officers worked hard to run this event and I am delighted we were supported by the police, fire service, Clarion Housing, local charity Gratitude and local residents in making the day such a success.

"During the day items from fencing and plastic furniture to metal and rubble was deposited in our skips and our incredible litter-pickers worked tirelessly to collect 10 bags of rubbish.

"We hope this innovative approach helps our communities to have pride in their local area, improve feelings of safety but also addresses the issue of fly tipping in Hertsmere, which blights the quality of life for people who live, work or visit our borough and our officers work tirelessly to clear up every year."

The event was organised by the council's Environmental Health and Street Scene teams.

Ward councillors for Borehamwood Hillside, Alpha Bird Collins and Aaditya Kaza together with Cllr Prabhakar Kaza, ward councillor for Borehamwood Kenilworth attended to support the event.
