Voter ID

In order to vote at a polling station you must show an acceptable form of ID. You do not need photo ID to vote by post.

Which forms of ID can I use to vote?

You can use any of the following:

  • a UK passport, or a passport issued by an EU country, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or a Commonwealth country
  • a UK or Northern Ireland photocard driving licence, including a provisional licence, or one issued by an EU country, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands
  • a Blue Badge
  • a PASS card bearing the Proof of Age Standards Scheme hologram
  • a biometric residence permit (BRP)
  • a Defence Identity Card (MOD form 90) or HM Armed Forces Veteran Card (MOD form 100)
  • a national identity card issued by an EU country, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein
  • a Northern Ireland Electoral Identity Card
  • an Older Person’s Bus Pass or Disabled Person’s Bus Pass
  • an Oyster 60+ card
  • a Freedom Pass
  • a Voter Authority Certificate or Anonymous Elector’s Document

Bring the original ID, not a photo on your phone or a photocopy. Expired ID is accepted if the photo still looks like you. Check the latest accepted ID list on GOV.UK.

If your name or appearance has changed

The photo must still look like you. If your ID name differs from the register, you can update your registration or take evidence of your name change, such as a marriage certificate.

If you don’t have an accepted form photo ID

If you do not have an accepted form of ID you can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate. Apply for a Voter Authority Certificate. You must be registered to vote to apply. You’ll be asked for a photo and National Insurance number, but can still apply without the number.

If you need any help with applying for a Voter Authority Certificate or want to request a paper application form, contact the elections team.
