Mayor to lead poignant Holocaust Memorial Day ceremony focused on a ‘better future’

The Mayor of Hertsmere, Cllr Richard Butler, will lead a poignant ceremony to mark Holocaust Memorial Day later this month, and everyone is welcome to attend.

The event will provide an opportunity to pause to remember the millions of people who have been murdered or whose lives have been changed beyond recognition during the Holocaust, Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

The event will take place on Monday 27 January at Hertswood Academy in Borehamwood’s Cowley Hill, starting at 6pm, where a ceremony will take place to include videos, speakers and musical performances.

‘For a better future’ is the theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2025. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Nazi-occupied Poland, as well as the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.

Mayor Cllr Butler said: “It will be both a privilege and deeply moving to lead this poignant ceremony at one of our key educational establishments in the borough, resonating with this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day’s theme as we both reflect on the tragedies that have gone before and look towards a better future.

“I hope to see many join me in remembrance of the millions who have tragically lost their lives as a result of discrimination and hate.”
