Council approves study for redevelopment options at Bushey site

We have approved a feasibility study to advance plans to redevelop the site of the former Bushey Golf and Country Club.

The study, which was given the go-ahead at a full council meeting on Wednesday (20 November) having been recommended by our Cabinet on 6 November, will assess proposals to build new homes, of which 35 per cent would be social and affordable, as well as a new community hub, commercial buildings and a car park, all on sections of the council-owned site which is in the green belt.

It is also proposed that the rest of the site - an area of around 42 acres - will remain in the green belt, becoming public open space and possibly designated as a local nature reserve.

We intend to secure a development partner for the proposed redevelopment scheme on the site, which is in our Draft Local Plan having been identified as a priority project in 2023. Further public consultations on the proposals will be held next year, giving residents another opportunity to have their say following previous rounds of consultation.

Earlier this year, the MPAA performing arts academy centre took up a tenancy there, enabling a valuable and worthwhile use for the site while its longer-term future continues to be developed.

Cllr Jeremy Newmark, Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Consultation, Communications and Asset Management, said: “We are committed to maximising the value and potential of our assets for the benefit of our residents. The site of the former Bushey Golf and Country Club is a great example of that commitment.

“A lot of work has been done so far to thoroughly consider all of the possible options for the site. Once again, local residents will have the chance to give their views on the proposals through public consultations, after which we intend to press ahead with a development which will protect the beautiful vista whilst delivering a combination of homes, community facilities and green space to serve our borough for generations to come.”
