A motion calling for Hertsmere to develop a Tree and Hedgerow Strategy has been agreed.
Hertsmere Borough Councillors approved the motion at their Full Council meeting last week (Wednesday 25 September) calling for a Tree and Hedgerow Strategy for the borough.
The motion highlighted that more needs to be done to protect existing trees and plant new trees in the borough, vital in tackling the climate, biodiversity and ecological emergencies, declared by the council.
Cllr Rebecca Challice, ward councillor for Borehamwood Brookmeadow, who proposed the motion, said: “Trees are vital in combatting climate change due to their ability to remove excess carbon dioxide from the environment, reduce flooding, filter air pollutants and provide wildlife habitats.
“Developing a dedicated strategy for trees and hedgerows in our borough, that includes feedback from our communities, calls on landowners to plant more trees, maps existing tree cover and recognises the work of our tree wardens, is vital to ensuring resources are properly targeted.”
Cllr Parveen Rani, who represents Borehamwood Kenilworth and seconded the motion, said: "We know trees are important to our residents, so we want to work with them to promote the importance of street trees and encourage everyone to nurture what’s in their road.
“It’s also important we continue to plant more trees on council land, to help create a cleaner, greener Hertsmere for future generations to enjoy.”
