You’re all invited to Hertsmere’s 50th anniversary celebration!

Hertsmere Borough Council is celebrating its 50-year anniversary with a free family fun day in the Civic Offices car park in Borehamwood on Sunday 29 September.

Between midday and 5pm you’ll be able to see classic cars, vintage stalls, community and food stands, hear live music and have a scream on classic fun fair rides.

Councillor Marc Amron, our Member Champion for Hertsmere’s 50th Anniversary, said: “Bring the whole family along to an afternoon filled with a range of fun entertainment! It’s free to enter and there will be lots for people of all ages to see and do.

“We’re creating a retro style celebration, so you’ll be able to see classic cars, vintage stalls, as well as fun fair rides – I hope to see you there!”

In addition to the family fun day, Hertsmere has given out thousands of pounds in small grants to local community groups and voluntary organisations to help celebrate Hertsmere’s 50-year anniversary during 2024.

The Hertsmere Community Lottery also donated an addition £250 to four good causes in the borough, as part of the celebrations.

Cllr Amron added: “The 50th anniversary of the formation Hertsmere provides an ideal opportunity to celebrate our wonderful borough and mark the contributions of so many to Hertsmere life.”

Hertsmere was created on 1 April 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972 by combining Aldenham Parish from Watford Rural District, Bushey Urban District, Elstree Rural District and Potters Bar Urban District.

The name ‘Hertsmere’ was coined for the new district by combining the common abbreviation of Hertfordshire with ‘mere’, an archaic word for a boundary. The name is reflected in the council's coat of arms, which shows a hart upon the battlements of a boundary wall.

The district was awarded borough status on 15 April 1977, allowing the chair of the council to take the title of mayor.
