Councillors, MPs and the PCC are elected to represent you. But who are they?
Hertsmere Borough Councillors
Hertsmere is divided into 16 wards and each ward has either two or three councillors. Councillors are elected for a four year term to represent the area and help make decisions about local issues. The last election of Hertsmere Borough Councillors took place on 4 May 2023.

Members' Allowances and Expenses
Our members' allowances scheme is made under the Local Government and Housing Act 1989 and the Local Government Act 2000 and in accordance with the Local Authorities (Members' Allowances) (England) Regulations 2003.
The regulations above allow councils to make a scheme which specifies the amount of allowance payable to members, including travel and subsistence allowances. The allowances are there to help support people who are elected due to the amount of time that is taken. However, the council must have regard to the recommendation of an independent remuneration panel in setting the allowances. The Panel makes recommendations on members' allowances in accordance with government guidelines.
We are required under the above regulations to publish our scheme of allowances for councillors. Details of our current scheme, as approved by the Council, are set out below and apply until the scheme is amended or replaced.
If a member's term of office does not cover the whole of a year, the amount of allowance payable will be proportionate to the actual term served.

Other local councillors: County, town and parish
As well as being represented by Hertsmere Borough Councillors, residents are also represented by County Councillors who together, with councillors covering the other Hertfordshire district and borough council areas, form Hertfordshire County Council.
You can find out who they are and other information via Hertfordshire County Council.
Some, but not all, areas in Hertsmere also have town or parish councils. You can find out about these on our town and parish council page.
Members of Parliament (MPs)
Members of Parliament (MPs) are elected by the residents of their local constituency when a UK Parliamentary General Election or UK Parliamentary by-election is called. A constituency’s boundary does not always have the same boundaries as the local government area that they are associated with.
Hertsmere Borough residents of the Bushey North Ward elect their MP within the Watford Parliamentary Constituency.
All other Hertsmere Borough residents (plus those of the Northaw and Cuffley Wards of Welwyn and Hatfield’s Borough) elect their MP for the Hertsmere Parliamentary Constituency.
You can find out who your MP is by visiting the House of Commons website.
Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC)
Once every four years elections (delayed in 2020 to 2021 due to COVID-19) Hertfordshire county elects a Police and Crime Commissioner. They are responsible for policing.
You can find out more about their work on the Herts Commissioner website.
